JF Automotive: a website that answers the first question
For an automotive business, almost every enquiry starts with the same question - what car have you got? Answering it on the page instead of in an email changes the whole conversation.
What this is
JF Automotive needed more than a brochure. In the automotive trade the first thing any conversation establishes is the vehicle, and until that is known nothing useful can be said about price, availability or suitability.
We rebuilt the site and put a vehicle registration lookup directly into it. A visitor enters a registration, the site identifies the vehicle, and from that point the conversation is specific rather than generic - which is the difference between an enquiry that takes three emails to qualify and one that arrives ready to act on.
The rebuild went well beyond the brochure and the lookup. It runs a shop with accounts, baskets and checkout, Klarna finance at the point of sale, a dealer portal, and trade accounts with their own pricing - all in the same system as the booking and the enquiry flow, so a customer, a vehicle and an order are the same records rather than three.
The business behind it has been trading since 2011 and carries a 4.8 rating from more than 2,200 reviews, which sets the bar for what the site has to not get wrong.
- Full website rebuild
- Ecommerce: catalogue, accounts, basket and checkout
- Klarna finance integration at the point of sale
- Dealer portal and trade accounts with their own pricing
- Vehicle registration lookup tool design and build
- Information architecture and content structure
- Performance and search foundations
Why a lookup rather than a form field
Asking a visitor to type their vehicle make, model, year, engine and variant is asking for four opportunities to be wrong and one good reason to leave. Many people don't know their exact engine variant, and the ones who do often mistype it.
A registration lookup replaces all of that with something every driver has in front of them or knows by heart. One field, one action, and the site now knows more about the vehicle than the customer could reliably have told it. Everything downstream gets better as a result - the enquiry is specific, the quote is accurate, and nobody has to go back and forth establishing basics.
It has now run more than 10,000 lookups. The practical effect is that enquiries arrive with the vehicle already identified rather than as a question, which removes an entire round of back-and-forth before anyone can quote.
Building the lookup properly
A lookup that feels instant and never leaves the visitor stuck is more engineering than it appears. It has to handle a plate that doesn't exist, a service that is slow or down, spacing and formatting that varies by how people write registrations, and a result that is technically correct but not what the customer expected.
The rule we worked to is that the visitor must never hit a dead end. Every failure path leads somewhere useful rather than to an error message - usually a manual route that keeps the enquiry alive rather than losing it.
Forgiving input
Spacing and case handled however a person naturally types a registration.
Fast feedback
The result arrives quickly enough that the visitor stays with the flow.
Graceful failure
No result, or a service problem, leads to a manual path rather than a dead end.
Confirmation
The visitor confirms the vehicle is right before anything is based on it.
The rest of the rebuild
Around the lookup, the site was rebuilt for speed and structure. Content was organised so that each service has a real page worth ranking rather than a line on a list, and the technical foundation - server-rendered pages, structured data, mobile performance - was put in properly rather than retrofitted.
That is the unglamorous half of the job and it is the half that determines whether the site is still working in two years.

Where to go next
Websites with Built-in Software
Most business websites are a brochure with a contact form. The ones that earn their keep let the customer do something - book, get a price, look something up, check a status.
Web & Mobile Apps
Most business apps fail for boring reasons: they are slow on the phone the customer actually owns, they break on bad signal, or nobody could find them. We build for those conditions first.
Software for Automotive and ECU Tuning Businesses
We know this industry well enough to have built our own products in it. RampDesk is our garage management software, used for tuning and remap work as well as servicing and MOTs. The Tuning File Portal automates file handling. This is not a vertical we picked off a list.
Our product, sold to the trade · Garage management softwareRampDesk
Garages don't run a sales pipeline. They run vehicles through stages. RampDesk is the software we built because nothing off the shelf models that.
